Judging & Oral Reasons Contest

The purpose of the Judging contest is to improve the cattle selection skills of the Juniors. The cattle in the contest are typically Simmental or SimGenetics and are brought in by local Simmental breeders. The contest consists of at least 3 classes which will feature live cattle from any segment of the beef industry. Performance data will be used when available. One or more of the placing classes will be designated by the judges as an oral reasons/questions class.

Time: 10 minutes/class
Materials Provided: Scantron, performance data
Materials to Bring: Pencil, clipboard, paper for notes
Contestants will judge and give at least one set of reasons on: Yearling bulls, Cow-calf pairs, steers, Yearling heifers
Attire: Business Casual
Public Speaking Contest

Public Speaking Contest

Contestants will draw random topics and select one on which to prepare a 3-7 minute impromptu speech. Time elapsed will be posted during the speech so that contestants are aware of timing. Speakers who finish before three minutes have elapsed, or who run past seven minutes, will be penalized 1 point for each second over/under. Following the speech, time will be allowed for questions from the judges.

Preparation Time: 30 minutes
Materials Provided: Pencil, 3x5 Notecards (2), Information packet on topic chosen
Contest Scoring: Subject Knowledge (20 percent); Organization (10 percent); Presentation (40 percent); Response to Questions (20 percent); General Effectiveness (10 percent).
Attire: Business Professional
Sales Talk Contest

Sales Talk

The Sales Talk contest uses a live setting complete with animal or photo (no larger than 8x10) or video and potential buyers. The purpose of this contest is to evaluate the effectiveness of the presentation and the contestant’s ability to merchandise cattle. Contestants may use any entry or photo/video of a SimGenetics animal as the subject of the Sales Talk. A contestant’s score will be reduced 10percent if additional materials are presented to the judges other than those listed in the above rules.

Time: 5-7 minutes
Materials to Bring: Registration Papers; Sales Talk Subject
Contest Scoring:Knowledge of animal (25 percent); Ability to relate important information about subject (25 percent); Poise and Delivery (25 percent); Overall effectiveness of convincing judge to buy animal (25 percent)
Attire: Business Casual

Cattleman's Quiz Contest
The Cattleman's Quiz is designed to test the contestant's knowledge of the beef industry and SimGenetics. The test is typically 35-50 age appropriate multiple choice questions.

Time: 1 1/2 hour
Materials Provided: Scantron, pencil, supplement information

Beef Skill-A-Thon Contest
Beef Skill-A-Thon Contest
The purpose of this contest is to test the contestant’s ability to identify common tools and equipment, terminology, diseases, forages, etc. essential to the beef industry. Contestants will be presented with examples via pictures or actual samples of items used in the industry and they will be asked to identify them or select the appropriate multiple choice answer.
Time: Contest length will be determined by the schedule and the complexity of the contest.
Materials to Bring: Scantron, pencil, supplemental information

Genetic Evaluation Quiz

The purpose of this contest is to test the contestant’s understanding of genetic evaluation resources including the sire summary, expected progeny differences and economic selection indexes. The quiz will consist of 30 multiple choice, matching, and true/false questions.

Time: 1 hour
Materials Provided: quiz questions, supplements, answer sheet, and pencils.
